Terrible Beauty

As my flight descended into Guatemala City, I could see a river of lava flowing down the side of a volcano, glowing bright red in the predawn darkness, the sharp peak silloueted against the horizon. During the civil war from the 1960´s to 1996, the government was known to drop rebels from helicopters into such volcanos.

That sucks. There are stories of disappearances in so many latin countries. In Argentina, they were dropped in the ocean. Still a big open wound in the society (how couldn't it be?)

It seems too James Bond to be real. I'd take ocean, personally, were I to have to choose. It's somehow so much more pernicious to disappear people than to, say, drop them from helicopters into the central marketplace (which you'd think would be the more effective deterrent to free thinkers.)
